Before a transfer of the deceased to the funeral home can be made, a death must be officially pronounced by an authorized individual — typically a physician, hospice nurse, medical examiner, or in some cases a paramedic or first responder. If the death occurs at home and was unexpected, 911 (non-emergency) should be called immediately. If your loved one was under hospice care, contact the hospice provider directly, as they are equipped to handle this step and can guide you through what comes next.

Once death pronouncement is in process, your next call should be to a funeral home. Our team is available around the clock — day or night — to respond promptly and transfer your loved one into our care. There is no need to rush any decisions about services or arrangements at this stage. Our only priority at this moment is ensuring your loved one is treated with dignity and respect.

Take the time to notify immediate family members and close friends before making any broader announcements. These conversations are deeply personal and are best handled with care and privacy before information is shared more widely. If possible, reach out by phone or in person, allowing space for questions, emotions, and support. Sharing the news thoughtfully ensures loved ones hear it directly from you, rather than through social media or other indirect channels, and helps create a sense of connection during a difficult time.
